Battle of the Classic Consoles Sega Mega Drive Classic vs SNES Classic Mini

Nintendo fans and Sega fans have been having it out ever since the SNES and Mega Drive got new releases with modern hardware. We took a look at both of these classic console remakes to see which gives you an experience closest to what you remember when you were a kid conning your little brother into playing co-op mode with you.Image result for brothers playing video games gif

The Sega Mega Drive Classic and Sega Genesis Classic

Since this console features pretty much the same design as the Atari Reboot, it’s completely limited to composite video and doesn’t even include video cables. That being said, if you’re used to playing on original hardware with the RF output the video is still going to look really sharp by comparison. So while those of us stuck in the past will love the RCA jacks, those who need an HDMI cable with 720p output will want to opt for the Sega Flashback. Mega Drive Classic units don’t have a resume/suspend button either, which means you’ll have to rely on the original pause button without a Flashback. Two wired Sega Mega Drive controllers give you the ability to force your little brother to play as Tails all over again when you start out as Sonic, though.

By the way, if you’re confused about the names, the Mega Drive Classic and Genesis Classic are actually the same unit. Genesis was the international name of the Mega Drive. Both versions come with 80 different games, including Vectorman and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. You’ll also find the first three Mortal Kombat titles bundled with it. If you’d prefer to be totally bored by comparison, then you can even play Sudoku.

The SNES Classic Mini

All SNES Classic Mini units support 720p HDMI video output, which is really exciting considering that Star Fox 2 got bundled in this package along with the original Star Fox. Having taken a frustrating page out of a modern developer’s handbook, Nintendo fans will have to unlock Star Fox 2 by playing the first Star Fox beforehand. This does hurt its image as a classic console, but two wired SNES controllers with longer cords coupled with the ability to save and suspend games certainly help the image. Nintendo fans have also been pleased to find that it comes with Super Mario World and A Link to the Past as well.

Unfortunately, the naming confusion Sega fans have to deal with rear their ugly head here too. You may have heard that the SNES Classic Mini comes with Final Fantasy VI but find that’s not the case when you get it. That’s because the game is called Final Fantasy III outside of Japan. Nintendo didn’t try to cheat you out of a game.

Who Won the Fight

Sega fans won if you consider the sheer number of games. Each Sega classic console comes with 80, but unfortunately, some titles are lackluster. It does feature every major marquee Mega Drive title, though, including Sonic & Knuckles. Nintendo fans only have 21 games to choose from, but nearly each one of these is a complete hit. If you don’t need HDMI video output, then the Mega Drive is probably the better choice. The SNES Classic Mini wins if you like a classic gaming experience on a huge modern TV.
